Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center
Hoedspruitt Endangered Species Centre (HESC) houses some of Africa's most rare and vulnerable species, including elephants, rhinos, cheetahs, and sable antelope. The center nurses injured animals back to health, breeds endangered species for release back into the wild, and provides educational programs for students and travelers.
The Basics
At HESC you can tour the grounds in a safari vehicle, observe animals in semi-wild bush environments, and learn from resident experts exactly what it takes to prevent extinction of the Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephant, and Cape buffalo). HESC tours are often combined with visits to nearby attractions such as Kruger National Park, Kapama Private Game Reserve, and Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
Things to Know Before You Go
- The center's on-site curio shop is stocked with locally made souvenirs, including clothing, toys, and other artifacts.
- The deli at HESC serves traditional South African dishes and sandwiches, plus hot and cold drinks.
- Children under 6 years old are free, while kids ages 6 through 11 can enter for a reduced rate.
How to Get There
HESC is located in South Africa's Limpopo province, about 4.5 hours by road from Johannesburg. Most tours depart from Hazyview and include round-trip transportation from area hotels. Parking is also available on-site.
When to Get There
The center is open year-round with the exception of Christmas day, with additional hours during the holidays and peak season (December through January). If you plan to spot wildlife at Kruger National Park, the dry winter season (May through September) is the best time to visit, as animals tend to congregate around water sources.
Accommodations at HESC
There are several accommodation options for visitors who would like to stay overnight at the center. Both the Sebeka self-catering cottage and Khula's Cottage are available for overnight stays, putting you in the center of the action with just a fence to separate you from animals wandering by.

Het Grachtenhuis
Amsterdam's picturesque ring of canals is one of the city's most iconic sights and after the famous waterways achieved UNESCO World Heritage status back in 2010, a new museum sprung up to celebrate their rich history.
The Het Grachtenhuis, or the Canal House, opened its doors in 2011 and features a series of exhibitions devoted to the history of Amsterdam's 17th-century canals and the city development project behind them. The self-guided tours utilize audio guides and a series of interactive installations to provide a uniquely entertaining and engaging rundown of how the system was designed and built. 3D video projections, miniature city models, animations and galleries all help to bring the exhibition to life, making it a thoroughly modern museum experience.
The Canal House itself, perched on the banks of the Herengracht or "˜gentleman's canal', is just as impressive outside as it is from the inside. The mid-17th century stately townhouse was designed by Philips Vingboons and inhabited through the years by a number of prominent Dutch tradesmen, including millionaire Jan Willink (famous for his generous donation to the Americans during the War of Independence). Today, it's a designated national monument and has been restored to its former glory, with original floors and wall paintings, as well as an idyllic courtyard garden.

Hacienda el Paraíso
With its flower-lined lawns, colorful rose gardens and gurgling water features, it's easy to see how the Hacienda el Paraíso (the Paradise Hacienda) earned its name, and the grand 120-acre estate is one of the most striking cultural attractions of the Valle del Cauca. Built in 1816 to oversee the region's sugarcane plantations, the Hacienda el Paraíso became famous later in the 19th century, as the home of iconic Colombian writer Jorge Isaacs and the romantic setting for his only novel, María.
Today, the Hacienda el Paraíso is protected as a National Monument and the main property has been converted into the Hacienda Paradise House Museum, which offers a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century Colombia. Hassel Island
Located on the western edge of St Thomas' harbor, Hassel Island was once part of a peninsula. But the Danish government decided that separating it from St Thomas would create better water circulation in the harbor, so in the 1860s Hassel Island was born. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers widened the channel again in 1919, further separating the island from St Thomas.
Today, it is primarily a national park and a popular spot with visitors to St Thomas. Hassel Island is best explored via a kayaking, hiking or snorkeling tour, all of which give visitors a combination of a history lesson and an eco-adventure. And although it is primarily governed as a national park, there are several private estates on the remaining land, including a 10-acre compound with three houses totaling 15,000 square feet.
The historic district encompasses the entire island and includes ruins from early 19th-century English fortifications and 19th-century shipping and coal stations. Important ruins of note include Shipley's Battery (Fort Shipley), a key reminder of Britain's presence and rule during the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s, and the Creques Marin Railway remains, built in the 1860s.
Hassel Island was home to a U.S. naval station from 1917 until 1932, when the island was purchased by a family to provide water for its distilleries. By the 1940s, the family owned 125 of the 135 acres and was receiving (and turning down) hefty offers from Korea and Germany to purchase the island. It was ultimately sold to the Virgin Islands National Park in 1978, preserving it for visitors today.
Practical Info
Insect repellent is heavily advised at Hassel Island and throughout the Caribbean. The island is open year-round to the public and is located south of Charlotte Amalie in St Thomas, from where visitors must arrange for water transportation. Overnight camping and fires are prohibited.

Helsinki Music Centre (Musiikkitalo)
Home to both the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Helsinki Music Centre (Musiikkitalo) is the Finnish capital's main concert hall. Sitting opposite Parliament House in the prestigious Töölönlahti district, the building and its copper facade may look gargantuan from the outside, but actually, most of its rooms are underground.
Home to the Sibelius Academy as well as Finland's national orchestras, the center was unveiled in 2011. With a modern and understated design, the center's unusual interior layout features weaving hallways, as well as a unique main hall, where up to 1,704 visitors are seated in a full circle around the orchestra.
Designed to sit in harmony with the stately buildings that surround it, the Helsinki Music Centre and its design have been well-received. This was not without controversial beginnings, however; to make space for the structure, an area of grassroots art spaces (that had been converted from derelict warehouses) had to be pulled down.
Practical Info
On Mannerheimintie 13A opposite the Finnish Parliament, Central Railway metro station is a 10-minute walk from the Helsinki Music Centre. You can visit the main hall and cafe for free, otherwise a ticket is necessary. It's a good idea to buy your performance tickets in advance, as they tend to sell out quickly.

Gustaf Adolf Square (Gustav Adolfs Torg)
Built in 1629 and known simply as Stortorget (Big Square) for two centuries, Gustaf Adolf Square gets its name from the plaza's statue of Gustavus Adolphus, king of Sweden from 1611 - 1632. Notice how the statue's finger points to the ground. Story goes, the king rode up Otterhällan Mountain and pointed to the fields surrounding the canal below, saying "The city shall be placed here."
Snap a pic of yourself doing the same pose as Gustaf, and you won't be the only one. Said to be one of the great military leaders of European history, the king is said to have steered Sweden to greatness in the Thirty Years War, so Gothenburg's main square seems a fitting place for his statue.
On the north side of the square, see Gothenburg City Hall, a neoclassical dream of gleaming white pillars, and a popular place to get married. Also look out for the city's law court. Its 1934 extension, by leading Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund, has been much lauded by fans of his modernist style.
At Christmas, a huge Christmas tree lights up the center, and Gothenburg's most famous winter market fills the plaza, harking back to the 17th century when farmers' carts filled the square and boats filled with food for sale jammed the canal.
Practical Info
Brunnsparken tram and bus stop is right next to Gustav Adolfs Torg, which is in the heart of Gothenburg city center.
