From steam locomotives to space travel, to cutting-edge science experiments, London's  Science Museum is one of the city's most engaging and interactive museums, offering a fun introduction to science for all ages. With over 300,000 items on display and 7 floors of exhibitions, there are endless learning opportunities, including children's discovery zones, hands-on experiments and multi-media displays.

Star exhibits of the Science Museum include Stephenson's Rocket, James Watson's DNA model, the "˜Puffing Billy' steam locomotive, the world's first jet engine and the Apollo 10 command capsule. Additional highlights include a fascinating collection of medical artifacts and instruments; the world's oldest display of clocks and watches; a Spacelab 2 X-ray telescope; and an I-MAX 3D cinema.

The Silfra fissure is a water-filled crack between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, where the two continents drift apart from each other. Water travels from the Langjökull glacier through porous lava rock during a journey that takes between 30 and 100 years before seeping into the fissure. 

Many visitors see the Silfra fissure during trips to Thingvellir National Park. To truly appreciate the fissure, it's best to go diving or snorkeling in the transparent water, which is lined with volcanic rocks. 

Only PADI-qualified divers with dry-suit certification can dive in the fissure, but snorkeling is available to all travelers, even those with no prior experience. Guided snorkeling tours of the fissure typically depart from Reykjavik. Some organized tours include other activities, such as spelunking in Gjábakkahellir or Leiðarendi lava caves. Other tours make stops along the Golden Circle at sights including Haukadalur, a geothermal valley home to Gullfoss waterfall and the great geyser and nearby Strokkur.  

The Silfra fissure is located within Thingvellir National Park, the UNESCO World Heritage Site where the world's first parliament met in the 10th century. Driving from Reykjavik to the fissure takes around an hour. 

Because the water that feeds Silfra travels underground, it maintains a constant temperature and doesn't freeze over. For this reason, snorkeling and diving tours are available year-round. Silfra is busier in summer; get there early in the day when crowds are thinner. 

The Silfra fissure isn't home to a multitude of marine life"”most fish prefer the warmer waters of Thingvellir lake"”but it is a breeding ground for many different types of algae. It also boasts some of the clearest waters in the world, with the natural purification process ensuring divers enjoy visibility exceeding 328 feet (100 meters). 

With over 3,000 animals and about 900,000 square meters of land, the Sao Paulo Zoo is the largest, most comprehensive zoo in Brazil. The zoo is located within the Parque do Estado, a massive reserve of the region's native Atlantic rainforest. This area is a lesser-known oasis of Brazilian jungle on the outskirts of the bustling city, and is a favorite among travelers with children. Due to its massive size, and other activities offered in the park, visitors should allot at least a half-day to explore.

A unique feature of this zoo is its incorporation of the natural landscape, which includes the lush rainforest and several lakes formed by the Ipiranga River. The Sao Paulo Zoo is home to many native animals of Brazil and plays a part in preserving and recovering threatened native species, like the lion monkey, neotropical cats, and the stunning Lear's macaw "” a deep blue parrot with bright yellow markings. There's also an impressive array of colorful, tropical birds, snakes and frogs, many of which are indigenous to Brazil. Other highlights include various species of monkeys, giraffes, elephants, hippos, camels and big cats like tigers and lions.

The building that now houses the Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection was once used as officer barracks and later as a police station. In 1967 it was the Egyptian Museum, which later moved back to Berlin's Museum Island in 2005. It reopened in the summer of 2008 as the Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection.

The collection began with Otto Gerstenberg who built up one of the most impressive art collections in Germany. His collection included almost all prints made by Albrecht Dürer, Francisco de Goya and Rembrandt. He also collected paintings from Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas. Gerstenberg eventually owned the complete set of prints of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.

Unfortunately his collection was severely damaged during World War II. In 1961, the pieces that remained were handed down to his grandsons Walther and Dieter Scharf, the latter of whom inherited prints by Francisco de Goya and Charles Meryon, as well as a lithograph series by Édouard Manet. His own collection included 300 pieces from over 50 Surrealist and Symbolist artists such as Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso and Alberto Giacometti. Other artists on display include Odilon Redon, Max Klinger, Alfred Kubin, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst and Rene Magritte.

Specializing in European art from the 14th to the 19th century, Sinebrychoff Art Museum is the only museum of its kind in Finland. Part of the Finnish National Gallery together with Ateneum Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Sinebrychoff displays an important collection of paintings by Old Masters including Rembrandt and Goyen. 

Housed in a mansion dating back to 1842, much of the furnishings are original and give an insight into the lives of Finland's upper classes during the 19th century. 

A popular place to spend a morning or an afternoon, Sinebrychoff has a good collection of Dutch and Flemish artworks from before 1830. Sinebrychoff also has a large display of miniatures, porcelains, and sculptures dating back to classical antiquity. 

The museum hosts a rolling collection of temporary exhibitions, generally at no extra charge. Often, the temporary exhibitions are dedicated to modern art, providing an interesting juxtaposition of old and new in the 19th-century house. 

Whether it's cruising the trails on board a quad bike or riding horseback through the quiet landscapes of this beautiful region, visitors will find plenty to do, see and experience in Savanne. La Vanille Crocodile Park offers travelers an alternative to surf and sand with an informative look at these giant reptiles, while the Grand Bassin, a tradition Hindu temple, offers a look at local spirituality and the historic Bois Cheri Tea Factory provides travelers with a literal taste of what this district has to offer. 

So expansive are the collections of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art that they need not one but two enormous buildings to house them: Modern One and Modern Two. Modern One, occupying a 19th-century building, features a collection of 20th-century works, including pieces from Tracey Emin, Matisse, Picasso, and Lichtenstein.

One of Edinburgh's leading modern art venues, the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art One is a common stop on hop-on hop-off bus tours of the city. The venue, which is situated in a neoclassical building opposite Modern Two, features exhibits from the permanent collection, including displays devoted to figurative art in Scotland from 1918"“1945, abstract art, Cubism and more. 

Free tours, including family-focused options and an introduction to contemporary art for adults, are held on select dates. Talks and workshops are also held here, as are performances. An audio tour, covering the grounds of Modern One and Two"”dotted with sculptures and works by the likes of Charles Jencks and Barbara Hepworth"”is available to visitors. Special exhibitions, occasionally held here, sometimes require a separate entrance ticket. 

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art One is located on Belford Road, amid a landscaped sculpture park, about a 15-minute walk west of Princes Street. To get there, take the Edinburgh Coach Lines Service 13 bus or ride the Gallery bus from the Scottish National Gallery on the Mound. Hop-on hop-off tour buses also stop at the museum. 

The museum's galleries are busiest on weekend afternoons, especially in the peak summer tourist season. Try visiting at opening (10am) or an hour or two before closing (5pm) to avoid the crowds. 

A host of household name artists are on show here, including British artist Bridget Riley who is synonymous with op art (short for optical art), a movement that focuses on using geometric forms to create sensations of movement, vibrating, or warping in paintings. Scottish artists are also given lots of space, with works from the likes of James McIntosh Patrick, Edward McEwan Baird, and Peter Howson hanging here. 

Seltún is located in a area of intense volcanic and geothermal activity called Krýsuvík, slightly southwest of Reykjavik on the Reykjane peninsula. It sits right above a major fissure on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and even in the land of 'fire and ice,' it is a bizarre and volatile landscape of steaming thermal springs, gurgling mud and cracks in the ground that spew forth hissing gasses and water warmed by subterranean layers of boiling magma, which raises temperatures underground to 200°C (390°F).

Set against an arid background of barren rocks layered with brown, green, red and yellow soils stained with minerals, steam and the acrid smell of sulfur hang heavy in the air above silver layers of mud and turquoise water. A wooden boardwalk allows visitors to view the bubbling hot springs close up and the Krýsuvík area is popular with photographers and hikers; a sign-posted walking trail departs from the parking lot at Seltún.

Said to host one of the finest art collections in the Southern Hemisphere, Sao Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) is where to go in Brazil if you want to get your fill of Boschs and Bellinis, Van Goghs and Gauguins. There are over 8,000 works in total, and, unusually, the rooms housing the permanent collection are arranged by theme rather than in chronological order. 

As you make your way round the large museum, you'll see dozens of Degas sculptures and works by some of Spain's most famous painters including Picasso and Velazquez. Representing the Latin American front, familiar names donning the walls include Diego Rivera, Candido Portinari, Torres Garcia, and Anita Malfatti.

Built in 1968 and designed by the modernist architect Lina Bo, MASP is a flash of red and grey in the heart of Paulista Avenue "” Sao Paulo's main boulevard of gleaming skyscrapers and banking headquarters, and the museum is almost as famous for the iconic concrete and glass building it sits in as it is its art. 

MASP is mainly dedicated to international art rather than Brazilian offerings, but there is a permanent collection showing the best of the country's modern artworks, prints, and drawings. Housing a collection of over 40,000 publications in all, the museum is also home to one of Brazil's largest art libraries. There's also a museum restaurant, Prêt no MAM, just to the left of the museum entrance. 

Is this India or England? Shri Swaminarayan Mandir would have anyone believe they've travelled halfway across the world in the blink of an eye thanks to its distinct architecture. The pristine white Hindu temple was built using entirely traditional methods and materials and up until 2000 it held the Guinness World Record of biggest Hindu temple outside India.

The construction posed two major challenges: the temple had to be built in accordance with the steel-free Vastu Shastras, India's ancient architectural texts, all while respecting Britain's strict building code in order to withstand the occasionally harsh weather. 3,000 tons of Bulgarian limestone and 1,200 tons of Italian Carrara marble were shipped to India to be carved and coded by professionals, returning to North London two years later as one gigantic, 26,300 pieces 3D jigsaw puzzle.

The temple is dedicated to reverence, adoration and gratitude and consists of a traditional Hindu mandir (which acts as the focal point of the complex and place of worship), the "˜Understanding Hinduism' permanent exhibition and the richly-carved Gujarati Haveli, a cultural and multi-functional center carved from Burmese teak wood.

Located near the famed Chamarel Waterfall, Seven Coloured Earth is one of the most popular destinations in Mauritius. This natural geological formation, surrounded by lush greenery in the southwestern region of the country, is made up of colorful rolling sand dunes whose look is constantly shifting and changing with the winds. 

Layers of volcanic rock, rich with iron and aluminum, give the dunes their unique red and blue colors, and travelers agree Seven Coloured Earth is a must-see stop for those visiting the country. Although a relatively new wooden fence prevents people from climbing the dunes, it's still impossible to miss the unique beauty of one of Mauritius's famed natural wonders. 

Established in 1852, the Singapore Cricket Club is one of the most prestigious sports and social clubs in Singapore. With its whitewashed walls, brown roof, and dark green blinds, the clubhouse harks back to Singapore's colonial era "“ a time when only the stronghold of the European elite were able to dine here and watch sporting events take place on the Padang. It wasn't until after World War II that the club's membership expanded to include Asians and other nationalities.

The Singapore Cricket Club has had three buildings on the Padang. The first was built in the 1860s, the second in 1877 and the third in 1884. Today, the Singapore Cricket Club is accessible only to its members and their guests and offers facilities for a variety of different sports. The club's interior is adorned with artwork and an assortment of memorabilia and its bars and restaurants offer some striking views out over the Padang and toward the city skyline.

Swaying palm trees, gentle azure waves, and dazzling white sands make Negril's Seven Mile Beach a postcard-pretty classic. With a nearly permanent spot on myriad "best beaches in the world" lists, you won't be alone in paradise"”but with miles of beach and nearly every water sport available, you're sure to find what you're looking for.

There's much more going on here than just miles of white sand. Many of Negril's main resorts line the beach, and private operators abound offer activities such as snorkeling, water-skiing, parasailing, and glass-bottom boat rides. Breezy open-air restaurants and beach bars are plentiful for delicious beachfront meals and drinks.

You can experience Seven Mile Beach on your own, or with a group or private half-day or full-day tour leaving from Falmouth, Montego Bay, Negril, or Ocho Rios. Depending on your departure city, tours may include time at the beach for sunbathing and water activities along with highlights of the chosen area, including a stop at local institutions like Rick's Cafe or Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville for sunset jams. Tours typically include round-trip transportation but not rental fees. 

Seven Mile Beach is directly north of Negril's center along Norman Manley Blvd. You can access the beach outside of the all-inclusive hotels, which restrict their sands to their guests. Have a taxi drop you off at the stretch called Bourbon Beach, which also has public bars and restaurants. 

Seven Mile Beach is a popular destination year-round. High-season winter months see the most visitors, but the beach is long and wide, so it never feels too crowded.

Visible in the distance from Seven Mile Beach is the lovely Negril Lighthouse. Standing 65 feet (20 meters) tall at Jamaica's most westernmost point, it is one of the earliest concrete lighthouses and has been guiding ships away from the craggy promontory since 1894. 

Adjacent to the Supreme Court, Singapore's City Hall is a national monument previously known as the Municipal Building. The structure was designed by architects of the government and built between 1926 and 1929. During World War II, the Japanese occupied Singapore and managed civic issues from the City Hall building. Ironically, it was from here that Lord Louis Mountbatten announced Japan's surrender in 1945. Six years later, the building received its present name to mark Singapore gaining city status, and later, it served as the site where Lee Kwan Yew declared Singapore's independence and self-governance.

Today, together with the neighboring Supreme Court, City Hall hosts the National Art Gallery of Singapore, featuring the world's largest public collection of Singaporean and Southeast Asian art. More than 8,000 works are on display, focusing on Singapore's culture and heritage, as well as the country's relationship with other cultures around Southeast Asia and the rest of the world.

Food vendors, mom and pop restaurants, video arcades and karaoke bars are just part of the draw Shilin Night Market. This tiny Taipei district comes alive at night when the doors of some 539 food court stalls, and small shops selling items that range from electronics to dress shoes open for business. Bold scents waft through the air and bright lights fill otherwise darkened streets, making this the perfect place to explore what local city nightlife is all about.

Visitors in search of typical fare will find literally hundreds of options at Shilin Night Market. Cold bubble tea, strong and sweet coffee, fried buns, intestines and stinky tofu are just some of the delights awaiting adventurous eaters. Travelers should come hungry and ready to explore, since navigating the network of stalls can take an entire evening. 

Together with the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art One, the Modern Two houses Scotland's national collection of contemporary art. Originally named the Dean Gallery, the 19th-century building hosts a permanent collection of dada and surrealist works, as well as a re-creation of the studio of Scottish sculptor Sir Eduardo Paolozzi. 

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Two is one of Edinburgh's leading modern-art venues, together with Modern One, which is housed in a neoclassical building just a short stroll away. Modern Two can be explored independently. Free scheduled tours and workshops typically take place in Modern One but may also include parts of Modern Two, depending on the topic being covered. 

As well as extensive dada and surrealist exhibits, Modern Two also houses a research library and archives. Those who want to explore the surrounding sculpture park, which features works by Barbara Hepworth and Rachel Whiteread, can do so with the help of a downloadable audio tour.

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Two is on Belford Road, across the street from Modern One. The museum is just a 15-minute walk from Princes Street in the city center. Ride the Edinburgh Coach Lines bus 13 to Modern Two or take the Gallery Bus, which travels a loop between the Scottish National Gallery, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. 

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Two is busiest on weekend afternoons. Visit midweek or come first thing on the weekend to avoid the crowds. 

The Modern Two holds the gallery's collection of surrealist works, which explore the edges of reality, focusing on dreams, the unconscious, and the fantastic. Among the many surrealist works at Modern Two is the large-scale painting Max Ernst montrant à une jeune fille la tête de son père (Max Ernst Showing a Young Girl the Head of His Father) by Max Ernst, and Le miroir magique (The Magic Mirror) by surrealist master Rene Magritte. 

Over in Modern One, visitors will find a range of 20th-century pieces covering movements such as cubism and op art, with works from big-name artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Henry Moore, Francis Bacon, and Tracey Emin among the collection.

The Schlumberger cellars in Vienna's nineteenth district are the oldest sparkling wine cellars in Austria. Schlumberger Cellars date back to the 18th century, and specialize in making sparkling wine. The 300­-year­-old cellars wind through several miles of underground tunnels, which store several million bottles of sparkling wine ("˜Sekt' in German). The brick­-lined tunnels (which were designed by the famous engineer Carl Ritter von Ghega, known best for designing the Semmering Railway) provide the steady, moderate temperature that's needed for the wine to properly ferment. The founder of the original vineyard trained as a winemaker in Reims, France, which meant that Schlumberger Cellars' sparkling wine was allowed to be called Champagne until France changed its winemaking laws in 1900. Schlumberger Cellars is a wonderful place to visit if you're a connoisseur of wine, or if you just like to drink it! The cellars combine a blend of contemporary and traditional features in their winemaking practices, and visitors can learn about making wine in the traditional methode Champenoise and even riddle some bottles while touring the extensive cellars. The wine is both excellent and reasonably priced, and visitors can sample a glass of it after one of the twice-­weekly tours.

Based in the grand 18th-century Luz Monastery, the Sacred Art Museum of Sao Paulo (Museu de Arte Sacra de Sao Paulo) is dedicated to ecclesiastical Brazilian works from the 17th to 20th centuries. 

The collection was started by the first archbishop of Sao Paulo, Dom Duarte Leopoldo e Silva, who gathered important sacred art from the chapels that were being demolished after the introduction of the Republic, though the museum itself didn't open until 1970. 

On a visit, look out for works by the renowned 18th-century sculptor Antônio Aleijadinho ,and visit the jewel room to see solid gold and silver artifacts. A newer addition to the exhibits on show is the section dedicated to nativity art "” head to the annex to see the impressive Neapolitan manger scene.
