International Bazaar
Opened in 1967, Freeport's International Bazaar has been recognized as a symbol of the Bahamas. Filled with shops, restaurants, and other locally-owned stalls, the Bazaar used to be the light of the town. It was tragically affected by the hurricane season of 2004, and was, for quite some time, considered an abandoned artifact of Bahaman life.
Luckily, life has begun to appear at the Bazaar in full force, as local merchants, restaurateurs, artists, and other business owners rallied together to restore it to its original glory.
Sample the local cuisine, create your own perfume, browse the handmade crafts, and get a taste of a true symbol of Freeport at the International Bazaar.
Practical Info
Located just 6km (4mi) out of central Freeport, the International Bazaar has something for everyone. With hundreds of shops to choose from, the best piece of advice for wandering the stalls is to wear good walking shoes.
The bazaar is stroller and wheelchair accessible, and has plenty of places to relax, eat, and enjoy the sunshine.
Palm Beach
- Palm Beach is one of the more crowded beaches on Aruba. If you’re after peace and quiet, a farther-flung beach (such as Arashi Beach or Malmok Beach) may be more your speed.
- Palm Beach is chock full of amenities, which makes it great for families with kids who frequently need snacks, activities, or bathroom breaks.
- Many Aruba island activities leave from the Palm Beach area, making it a great jumping-off point for those who aren’t content to just lounge on the beach all day.

Los Haitises National Park
Any trip to Los Haitises is special, but for bird-watchers, the park is a treasure trove of frigate birds, parrots, owls, brown pelicans, and royal terns. Winged wildlife flock by the hundreds around the bay’s transparent waters, and the mangrove swamps provide a safe home for all sorts of small sea creatures. Trails lead into the subtropical forest for 4x4ing, biking, hiking, and horseback riding adventures. In January, the park opens up to whale-watching tourists hoping to spot these oceanic giants mid-migration.

Mt Liamuiga
Nearly half way up the mountain, the land is a patchwork of farmland and small villages, beyond which tropical rainforest covers the slopes before giving way to cloud forest. Guided tours to the summit are readily available starting from Belmont Estate in St. Pauls. The whole of the island is easily visible from the top, as well as the nearby islands of Saba, Statia, St. Barths, St. Martin, Antigua, and Nevis.

Museum of Antigua and Barbuda
With its blend of geology, ecology, history, and art, the museum offers something for everyone. Whether you want to check out a diorama of the island's volcanic origins, look at fish fossils, see native pottery, or learn about its British colonization, the museum's exhibits have answers to all burning questions about Antigua and Barbuda.
Little Water Cay (Iguana Island)
Little Water Cay is just shy of 500 yards from Providenciales, so it’s easy to spot while looking for things to do on the island. You can take a tour boat or ferry over to the island, and the exercise enthusiast or outdoorsman of the group will enjoy a brisk kayak over to the shores of Little Water Cay - but be careful of the currents that run between the two islands (for this reason, a swim is not recommended).
Once here, there’s little to do aside from hoofing it around the island, lazing about on the white sand beaches, or exploring what is Little Water Cay’s best attraction – the Turks and Caicos Rock Iguana. Little Water Cay has two boardwalks installed that make loops around the north and south of the island. These are perfect opportunities to get out and see the iguanas in their natural settings without disturbing them – and not disturbing them is a good thing – the Turks and Caicos Rock Iguana is protected as it’s an endangered species; the introduction of cats and dogs to the islands all but wiped them out.
So do yourself a favor and see them while you can – the little green charmers are oddly appealing. Find them sunning on rocks and scurrying through the brush!
Museum Kura Hulanda
Colonial relics, maps and Antillean art come together at the Kura Hulanda Museum, with the focus on the museum’s world-class collection of African artifacts. Guided and audio-guided tours are available, and a self-guided map helps you navigate your way around the exhibits. The museum shop has a good collection of maps, postcards, CDs and African art for sale.
