What To Expect

This Kaneohe Bay snorkeling tour begins at your hotel door, where your local guide will meet you for transport to He'eia State Park. Set on Oahu's windward coast, which faces east towards the island of Molokai, the beaches here are far less developed than those back in Waikiki.Upon reaching isolated Kaneohe Bay, lifejackets, dry bags, and snorkeling gear are distributed by one of your guides. You'll explore a map that explains the area, and receive professional paddling instruction before settling into your kayak. Next, you'll conveniently tie up to an escort boat that does the hard work for you, as it tows your kayaks out towards the bay to maximize time spent snorkeling.Â Once you unlink from the escort boat, your professional guide will lead you on a paddle towards the shores of Coconut Island, which at one point was used to film Gilligan's Island, but is now used for research and educational classes by the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. During your paddle, your guide will narrate the cultural history surrounding Kaneohe Bay, and discuss the unique marine ecology of Oahu's only barrier reef.Â Upon reaching the shores of Coconut Island, you'll next embark on a snorkeling tour of a protected section of coastline, where sea turtles, manta rays and even eagle rays will sometimes pay you a visit. After you work up an appetite from snorkeling, you'll snack on granola bars and sip on juice before paddling back across the bay.Â If the morning trade winds start to blow "” or you're simply tired from snorkeling "” the escort boat is available to shuttle you all the way back towards the beach. On land, there are showers and changing rooms where you can freshen up for a barbecue lunch on the beach, where chicken, pork ribs and corn on the cob are served with an oceanfront view.
