Set in what was the workshop of Florence's Duomo, the museum was also once a repository for artworks removed from the Duomo complex. Today, it's home to 750 masterpieces that once graced the cathedral, Baptistery, and Bell Tower, including works by Donatello and Michelangelo. First, visit the stunning Hall of the Ancient Façade, home to a life-size replica of the original Duomo façade, begun by Alfio di Cambio in 1296, but later dismantled. See the reproduction's 40 original sculptures including Donatello's statue of St. John, and view the original, 14th-century Baptistery doors, including Lorenzo Ghiberti's golden gates, dubbed the 'Gates of Paradise' by Michelangelo. Then, move on to explore the other wonders as your guide sheds light on their creators and original purpose. View the PietÃƒÂ del Duomo by Michelangelo, learning how the face of Nicodemo, depicted as holding Christ, is thought to be the artist's self-portrait. Gaze, too, at the 16 life-size statues made for the Bell Tower, and other showpieces including the 15th-century wooden models of the Duomo's dome, sculptures by Donatello and Luca della Robbia, and the Altar of St. John and the Cross, a masterpiece containing a fragment of Christ's cross. Having explored the museum, continue with a guided exterior tour of the Duomo complex, including the Duomo, Brunelleschi's Dome, Bell Tower, and Baptistery. Afterward, you're free to continue exploring independently by your ticket, which includes access to the Duomo interior, crypt, and Baptistery, and lets you climb up Brunelleschi's Dome and Giotti's Bell Tower for bird's-eye views.
