Then, relax on the drive to Chichen Itza, named one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World. When you arrive at the archeological park, follow your guide on a tour of the impressive pyramids, plazas and ancient temples of the Itzae Maya. While you explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site on foot, your guide will tell you anecdotes about this archaeologically significant capital of the Mayan Empire. Visit the ball court and the nunnery, and gaze in awe at the 78-foot (24-meter) Pyramid of KukulcÃ¡n. Youâ€™ll begin to understand the mystical power of the Maya as you peer at El Castillo, the Temple of the Warriors and the circular observatory known as El Caracol.After your small-group tour, check in at Mayaland Resort, where a delicious buffet lunch will be served. Enjoy a refreshing dip in any of the swimming pools, stroll through the lovely gardens or simply watch the tropical birds of the Yucatan. In the evening, you are free to relax at the hotel, walk the paths in the middle of the jungle or take another delightful swim. Overnight: Mayaland Resort in Chichen ItzaDay 2: Chichen Itza â€“ Merida (B)After breakfast at the hotel, board the minivan for a transfer to the Balankanche Caves, once the site of important Mayan ceremonies, located just three miles (six km) from Chichen Itza. A stoneâ€™s throw from the cave entrance is the Balam Throne, a type of ceremonial altar. Check out the museum exhibit nearby, including documents and photographs of sacred objects found within. Then tour the caves, where youâ€™ll find impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations inside. View evidence of Mayan ceremonial offerings left by priests more than 1,000 years ago, including jade jaguars and ceramic figurines of the rain god, Chaac. Follow your guide into the second cavern to watch a light and sound show recounting the history of the Balankanche Caves. After returning to the hotel, enjoy some free time to explore Chichen Itza on your own or simply relax by the pool. If youâ€™d like, you can take a horseback riding tour (at your own expense), ready to return to Merida at 2:30 pm.
